Themed outdoor learning activities

What services we offer

We work with schools to design and run outdoor-based activities that help to bring curriculum subjects or specific topics to life, and in a way that helps pupils to gain a deeper and more memorable understanding. The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics states that "Learning mathematics outside the classroom is not an enrichment - it is at the core of empowering an individual's understanding of the subject". Experts and experience suggest the same could be said of most curriculum subjects. There is an increasing amount of evidence which points clearly to the value and importance of outdoor learning, and it can be a remarkably effective way of engaging pupils who might otherwise have no interest or understanding.

How to book

If you have a subject or topic that you think might benefit from some creative and exciting "wow"tdoor learning, please do not hesitate to get in contact. Whether it is Maths (e.g. shapes or angles), Science (e.g. forces or friction), Geography (e.g. compass directions or cities of British Isles), History (Stone Age or Romans), or any other subject, we might be able to help bring the topic to life by devising and running some enjoyable and engaging outdoor activities, based in your own school grounds.

Outdoor learning normally involves considerable physical, as well mental activity, so many schools justifiably use Sports Premium funding to help pay for these activities. To reduce costs further, why not arrange a training course with other schools in your cluster.

We aim to ensure that our activities are accessible and affordable for all.

What teachers say

"Taff visited our school to deliver an engaging and exciting learning opportunity for our Year 5/6 pupils linked to our Romans topic, and involved a range of different activities:

  • Roman aqueducts - pupils moved water along channels and built arches across valleys to transport water without leakages between 2 points.
  • Roman army weapons - pupils made bows/arrows and spears to fire at Celt warrior targets (with woad face paint and lime in hair to look fierce)
  • Roman invasion of Britain - pupils created a large outline map of UK and added markers to show locations of main Roman towns and roads and Hadrians wall and invasion locations etc.
  • The place of Romans in history – pupils created flags marked with different periods of British history in order to show times of Roman expansion, invasion etc.
  • Roman army weapons – pupils made catapults (ballistas) to fire sponge balls at targets
  • Roman fort - pupils planned the foundations of a Roman fort  using Decempeda (10ft length poles) .

The children learnt a lot about the Roman way of life but also built on communication skills, team work, and problem solving. It was thoroughly enjoyed"

Scottish Curriculum Guidelines

“Outdoor learning can benefit pupils of all ages … enriches the curriculum and can improve classroom attainment”

House of Commons Education and Skills Committee

“Good Learning Outside the Classroom must be about raising achievement through an organised and powerful approach to learning in which direct experience is at the heart of the learning. When properly integrated into schools and children's services, it can help significantly in achieving better outcomes for all children and young people”.

Lindsay Newton, Association of Directors of Children Services (ADCS)
